Prolonging the Life of a Torn Bag

Arts & Crafts, Fabrics & Materials, My Spaces

I love my blue Marimekko unikko (poppy) bag to bits – literally, I’m sorry to say. Something had to be done.

Poppy Bag Damaged

Ta-dah! Reinforcing the torn edge with buttonhole stitch should give it a few more years.

Poppy Bag Fixed

I used regular cotton embroidery floss, since that was the best color match I had. I know it’s not the most durable of threads; I’ll have to see how well it does under the rigors of everyday life.

Marimekko for Target to Launch in April

Design & Designers

This spring, Marimekko will team up with Target to introduce the Finnish design house’s wares to a wider public in the U.S.

Marimekko for Target April 2016

Marimekko, via Target.

From Target’s announcement:

“Finland has four distinct seasons, and once the cold and dark of winter fade away, the Finns couldn’t be happier to get outside with friends and family to enjoy some much-deserved sunshine. In fact, in the summertime, the sun stays out until nearly midnight! That glimpse into the local culture gave birth to the idea behind the Marimekko for Target collaboration: Two iconic brands joining forces to create the feeling of an eternal summer and carefree outdoor living by offering items that bring people together and encourage them to play!” […]

“…features more than 200 playful, print-centric pieces that span outdoor décor, furniture and entertaining essentials, as well as beach and swimwear for women and girls. Standout items include the paddle board, inflatables, hammocks and swimsuits. The collection also features a number of firsts for Marimekko, including the bocce ball sets and parachutes.”

The collection will be available from April 17, 2016, both in stores and online at Target.com, till the beginning of May or while supplies last. Patterns in the Marimekko for Target collection have been designed by Maija Isola.

Even though Marimekko runs its own stores in larger cities around the world, it’s still a matter of chance whether you have a store near you or not. I for one will be delighted to have Marimekko within easy reach!

Found via Helsingin Sanomat (in Finnish) and Target.

Note: I wasn’t paid or perked to mention this; just passing along a good thing.

Mini Bins for Chargers

Arts & Crafts, DIY, Fabrics & Materials, My Spaces

The other day I was lamenting how tangled up my mobile device chargers were and wished I had something to organize them with. Belatedly I realized that I was in a “cobblers children have no shoes” situation: the mini cubes I sell on Etsy are the perfect size, but I hadn’t made any for myself yet.

Mini Bins for Chargers

I chose remnants of a favorite, the Marimekko Lumimarja fabric in blue, beige and brown. I used the same design as my Etsy store cubes but halved the height because there wasn’t enough of the Lumimarja, then lined the bins with coordinating greyish blue fabric. No more tangles!

Favorite Handmade Xmas Presents from 2014

After Hours, Arts & Crafts, Fabrics & Materials

Happy New Year to each and everyone! I had such a relaxing Christmas and a great break in general. I hope that was also the case for you. It’s good to be back to a fresh start, though, with some fresh snow outdoors. I just love how everything looks so clean and clear and soft after snowfall.

Speaking of soft: Every year, I try to include something handmade in my Christmas presents. Here are some soft projects from 2014 that I most enjoyed making:

2014 Handmade Xmas Presents

Clockwise from top right: three nesting bins in the recipient’s favorite colors; simple gift wrapping with a hunter green envelope, a bunny paper clip and a recycled Christmas card cut down to size; freeform hand-embroidered rosemary sachets, cotton on cotton muslin; two nesting bins out of blue Marimekko poppy print fabric; and eight fabric coasters with felt innards and fringed edges, complete with a small custom storage bin in coordinating colors.

In this case, part of the pleasure came from being able to use for personal gain a fabric bin construction technique I developed for my business.

Any handmade gifts you either made or received that you’d like to share? Please do!

Colors: Invoking Autumnal Nature

Arts & Crafts, Colors, Design & Designers, Inspiration

Marimekko’s latest home décor line, Sääpäiväkirja (Weather Diary), was inspired by Finnish nature in the fall: wind-blown trees, rustling reeds, glowing golden grasses, storm-soaked rocks and misty archipelago mornings. I grabbed my favorite dishware into one collage:

I am certainly reminded of sky and water when the weather is changing, or of seeing a golden sunrise through mist.

In the design process, I’m fascinated by the number of iterations a pattern might go through before “the one” emerges. Below is a photo with the Sääpäiväkirja coffee mug and some of the sketches:

If you’re at all interested in the design process, you should definitely visit the U.S. Marimekko site for more photos of sketches next to finished products.
